درسُ مَصْدَرِ الفِعْلِ الخُماسِيِّ المَزِيدِ بِحَرْفٍ (وَزْنُ تَفَعَّل)

The Form V verb pattern is تَفَعَّلَ. It is usually derived from Form II (فَعَّلَ). Form V is structurally built on the Form II pattern and is typically its reflexive or middle counterpart. It often expresses a reflexive meaning, gradual development, internal change, deliberate effort, or behaving in a certain way.

The verbal noun (المصدر) of Form V normally follows the pattern تَفَعُّل. The middle root letter carries a shadda.

Examples:

تَعَلَّمَ — root ع ل م — verbal noun تَعَلُّم (learning)
تَحَدَّثَ — root ح د ث — verbal noun تَحَدُّث (speaking)
تَقَدَّمَ — root ق د م — verbal noun تَقَدُّم (progress)
تَغَيَّرَ — root غ ي ر — verbal noun تَغَيُّر (change)
تَذَكَّرَ — root ذ ك ر — verbal noun تَذَكُّر (remembering)

The Form V verbal noun behaves like a normal noun. It can function as the subject of a sentence, as the object, after a preposition, or in an iḍāfa construction.

Simple examples at B1 level:

التَّعَلُّمُ مُهِمٌّ في الحياةِ
Learning is important in life. Root: ع ل م

Function: The verbal noun التَّعَلُّمُ is the subject (مبتدأ) التَّعَلُّمُ: مبتدأ مرفوع وعلامة رفعه الضمة الظاهرة

أُحِبُّ التَّحَدُّثَ مَعَ أَصْدِقائي
I like speaking with my friends. Root: ح د ث

Function: The verbal noun التَّحَدُّثَ is the direct object (مفعول به) of the verb

أُحِبُّ التَّحَدُّثَ: مفعول به منصوب وعلامة نصبه الفتحة الظاهرة

نَجَحَ بِسَبَبِ تَحَسُّنِ صِحَّتِهِ
He succeeded because of the improvement of his health. Root: ح س ن

Function: The verbal noun تَحَسُّنِ comes after the preposition بِسَبَبِ and is in an iḍāfa construction with صِحَّتِهِ.

تَحَسُّنِ: مضاف إليه مجرور وعلامة جره الكسرة الظاهرة، وهو مضاف

تَقَدُّمُ الطُّلّابِ سَريعٌ
The students’ progress is fast. Root: ق د م

Function: The verbal noun تَقَدُّمُ is the subject (مبتدأ) and it is in an iḍāfa construction with الطُّلّابِ.

تَقَدُّمُ: مبتدأ مرفوع وعلامة رفعه الضمة الظاهرة، وهو مضاف

يَحْدُثُ تَغَيُّرٌ في الطَّقْسِ في الشِّتاءِ
A change happens in the weather in winter. Root: غ ي ر

Function: The verbal noun تَغَيُّرٌ is the grammatical subject (فاعل) of the verb يَحْدُثُ

تَغَيُّرٌ: فاعل مرفوع وعلامة رفعه الضمة الظاهرة
